Os números em inglês são classificados em cardinais (cardinal) e em ordinais (ordinal).

Os números cardinais são os, um, dois, três, dez, quinze, cem mil...

Na tabela abaixo temos a grafia e composição dos números de 0 à 2000.

Attention:

1) O número 100 pode ser dito de duas formas em inglês: a hundred ou one hundred. Para formar as outras centenas, basta unir a palavra hundred a uma palavra que represente uma unidade (two, three, four..).

Exemplos:

400 - four hundred;
500 - five hundred;
600 - six hundred

2) Diferentemente do que acontece em português, o uso da conjunção e (and) para ligar unidades, centenas e milhares é opcional.

Exemplos:

145 - a hundred and forty-five ou a hundred forty-five
1.234 - a thousand and two hundred and thirty-five ou a thousand, two hundred thirty-five

Os números cardinais são usados para dar uma sequencia, primeiro, segundo, terceiro...

Attention

1) Em inglês, quando um número é formado por mais de um algorismo, somente o último algarismo é expresso como ordinal.

Exemplos:

21st - apenas o número "1" é expresso como número ordinal: twenty-first
75th - apenas o número "5" é expresso como número ordinal: seventy-fifth

2) Geralmente, os números ordinais em inglês são formados com a adição do sufixo “-th”. No entanto, a forma por extenso de alguns números apresenta os sufixos: “-st” (first), “-nd” (second) e “-rd” (third).

Observe que a forma abreviada de expressar cada número ordinal é feita através do uso das duas últimas letras da forma por extenso.

Exemplos:

• 1º > first > 1st
• 2º > second> 2nd
• 3º > third > 3rd
• 15º > fifteenth > 15th
• 38º > thirty-eighth > 38th

Vamos praticar os números com os seguintes versos:
Nursery rhyme(rima infanto-juvenil)

One, two – buckle my shoe,                                  
three, four – knock on the door,                            
five, six – pick up sticks,                                       
seven, eight – close the gate,                                 
nine, ten – a big fat hen                                         
eleven, twelve – dig and delve,                             
thirteen, fourteen – couples courting,                    
fifteen, sixteen – mice in the kitchen,                    
seventeen, eighteen – I’m still waiting,                 
nineteen, twenty – my plate’s empty.                     

tradução:

um, dois – amarre meu sapato,
três, quatro – bata na porta,
cinco, seis – pegue os gravetos,
sete, oito – feche o portão,
nove, dez – uma grande galinha gorda
onze, doze – cave (um buraco) e procure,
treze, quatorze – casais namorando,
quinze, dezesseis – ratos na cozinha,
dezessete, dezoito – ainda estou esperando,
dezenove, vinte – meu prato está vazio.
